2 chalisas

Why a chalisa, why now

A 40-verse offering of presence

A chalisa is forty verses sung from memory or read from a small book in hand. It takes only a few minutes – but it is a complete offering, with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

A short, daily anchor

Most chalisas take five to seven minutes to recite. They give the day a sacred beginning – before the phone, before the noise, before the world starts asking.

Composed by saints

The Hanuman Chalisa was written by Tulsidas in the 16th century. Many others were composed by Ravidas, Gorakhnath, and devotees over generations – tested by centuries of recitation.

Travels with you

A chalisa needs nothing – no samagri, no priest, no specific location. Just the verses and your shradha. Recite at home, on a flight, before an exam, or in a difficult moment.

Frequently asked questions

What people often ask about chalisas

If your question isn't here, just call or message us. We answer ourselves – in Hindi or English.

What exactly is a chalisa?
A chalisa is a 40-verse devotional poem (chalis means forty in Hindi) composed in praise of a deity, saint, sacred place or planet. The most famous is the Hanuman Chalisa by Tulsidas. Each chalisa describes the powers, stories and blessings of its subject in a fixed form – an opening doha, forty chaupais, and a closing doha.
Is there a right time to recite a chalisa?
Most chalisas can be recited at sunrise after a bath, or at dusk before evening prayers. Specific chalisas have traditional days – Hanuman on Tuesday and Saturday, Shiv on Monday, Durga during Navratri, Shani on Saturday. Each chalisa page on this site lists the suggested timing.
Do I need to know Sanskrit or Hindi to recite?
No. Devotion matters more than perfect pronunciation. Each page on this site shows the chalisa in clear English transliteration, so anyone can follow along. We also share the meaning of every section so the recitation feels alive, not mechanical.
How many times should I recite a chalisa?
There's no fixed rule. Once a day, every day, is a beautiful daily practice. For specific intentions or anushthans, traditions suggest 11, 21, 41 or 108 paaths. The Hanuman Chalisa is often recited seven times in a row on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Choose what feels sustainable – consistency matters more than count.
What's the difference between a chalisa, a stotra, and an aarti?
A chalisa has exactly 40 chaupais plus opening and closing dohas – a fixed form in praise of one deity. A stotra is a hymn that can be of any length and metre. An aarti is a short song of praise sung at the close of worship, traditionally with a lit lamp circled before the deity. All three are devotional, but a chalisa has its specific 40-verse structure.
Is there a specific direction to face while reciting?
Traditional guidance suggests facing east (the rising sun) or north for most chalisas. If you have a murti or photograph at home, facing the deity directly is also good. When no direction is possible – on a train, in a meeting, in a hospital – the recitation is still considered fully effective. Devotion is not bound by direction.
Can a chalisa be recited silently?
Yes. Manasik (silent) recitation is valid and traditional – often recommended in offices, public places, or while travelling. Voiced recitation has its own merit because the sound itself is a form of offering, but the inner recitation reaches its mark just as well. Choose what fits the moment.
