The Navagraha Chalisa is the unified hymn to the nine planets of Vedic astrology: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu. Each section addresses one planet directly. This makes the Chalisa the single most important text for general planetary worship in the household tradition.

The Chalisa is uniquely permitted daily, with no restrictions. Many homes recite it as part of the morning sandhya, before any astrological consultation, or before any major life decision involving planetary periods. Verses 4-9 establish the framework with the salutation to all nine planets together. The closing dohas confirm the composer signature: Sundardas, the same 17th-century saint-poet who composed the Krishna and Bhairav Chalisas.

This page has the full Navagraha Chalisa with lyrics in Devanagari and Romanized English. Three closely related texts to know alongside - the Surya Chalisa, the Shani Chalisa, and the Gayatri Chalisa.

Why this chalisa

What the Navagraha Chalisa is recited for, and what people turn to it for.

Daily anchor for graha-shanti

Many traditional households recite the Navagraha Chalisa as part of the morning sandhya. The Chalisa addresses all nine planets together. Pair with planet-specific Chalisas on weekdays.

During mahadasha changes

When a Vedic-astrology mahadasha or antardasha changes, many devotees recite the Navagraha Chalisa for 21 or 41 days as a graha-shanti practice.

Companion to weekly planet practice

Sunday: Surya. Monday: Chandra. Tuesday: Mangal. Wednesday: Budh. Thursday: Brihaspati. Friday: Shukra. Saturday: Shani.

For protection during difficult planetary periods

Shani sade-sati, Rahu mahadasha, Ketu antardasha - many devotees recite specific sections during their respective dasha periods.

Companion to Vedic mantras

The Navagraha Chalisa is in Hindi, accessible without Sanskrit training. For traditional practice, pair with the Sanskrit Navagraha Stotram and bija-mantras.

For new business openings

Many trader households recite the Navagraha Chalisa before major business openings, financial decisions, or contract signings - to ensure favourable planetary alignment.

Origin

The Navagraha Chalisa is signed in the closing doha by Sundardas - the same 17th-century saint-poet of the Dadu Panth whose colophon closes the Krishna, Bhairav, and Ganga Chalisas.

The Navagraha tradition itself is rooted in classical Vedic astrology. The classical Sanskrit Navagraha Stotram (Japakusumasankasham...) is the Vedic precedent for this Hindi Chalisa.

Each of the nine planets has a specific role: Surya - soul, father; Chandra - mind, mother; Mangal - energy, courage; Budh - intellect, communication; Brihaspati - wisdom, dharma; Shukra - love, beauty, wealth; Shani - discipline, karma; Rahu - ambition, foreign matters; Ketu - moksha, detachment.

The Chalisa wider companions: Surya Chalisa, Shani Chalisa, planet-specific texts.

How to recite

A simple, sustainable approach. Nothing here is a hard rule – devotion shapes the form, not the other way around.

  1. Preparation

Bathe and wear clean clothes. Sit facing east. Traditional offerings: nine flowers (each colour for each planet), akshat, fruits, ghee diya.

  2. Posture and start

Sit cross-legged, spine straight. Bow once. If reciting before astrological consultation or for graha-shanti, offer brief sankalp.

  3. Recitation

Move through chaupais without rushing. Each section addresses one planet - pause briefly between sections.

  4. After

End with the Sanskrit Navagraha Stotram or bija-mantras of the difficult planet.

  5. Daily practice and special days

Daily recitation permitted. Specific days for specific planets. During mahadasha changes, 21 or 41 days of daily recitation.

Common questions

What is the Navagraha?
Nine planets of Vedic astrology - Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu. Each governs specific aspects of life.
How is this different from individual planet Chalisas?
Navagraha addresses all nine in nine sections. Many homes recite this daily plus the planet-of-the-day Chalisa.
Can the Chalisa help during difficult dasha periods?
Yes. Verses addressing the difficult planet are recited especially during sade-sati, Rahu, or Ketu dashas. (Devotional faith, not substitute for astrological consultation.)
Are there restrictions on recitation?
No. Daily recitation permitted without restriction.
Does language matter?
Devotion matters more than perfect pronunciation.
Should I recite alongside individual Chalisas?
Yes. Navagraha Chalisa daily + planet-of-the-day Chalisa is the standard household practice.
Can I recite silently or while travelling?
Yes. Manasik reciting is valid.
Connection to Ujjain temples?
Ujjain was historically the seat of Vedic astronomy. The Vedh Shala observatory and the Mahakaleshwar precinct preserve Navagraha shrines. Aastha can guide both.
