The Hanuman Bahuk is Goswami Tulsidas's 44-verse prayer for the healing of body-pain – particularly arm-pain, shoulder-pain, and joint-pain. The word bahuk means 'arm-pain' itself, and the text is held in tradition to have been composed by Tulsidas in his own old age, when he suffered severe arm pain that ordinary medicine could not heal. He turned to Hanuman, composed this 44-verse petition, and (the tradition continues) the pain was lifted. The Bahuk is structured in mixed metres unusual for a household devotional text – Chhappay, Jhulna, Ghanakshari, Savaiya, and Doha – reflecting Tulsidas's mastery of the older Awadhi-Brajbhasha tradition.

The Bahuk is recited specifically for sustained body-pain – particularly when ordinary remedies have not succeeded. The traditional rule: read the Hanuman Chalisa first as the foundation, then this Bahuk after. Many devotees also recite it alongside ongoing medical treatment, holding to the older household teaching that prayer and medicine work together. Tuesday and Saturday are the standard days; sustained illness leads many to daily recitation. Verses 20-22 of the Bahuk carry the central petition: "Bahuk peer mahabir begi hi nivariye" – 'great brave one, lift away the arm-pain quickly' – which the Bahuk repeats with growing intensity through the closing verses. (This is a verse of devotional faith, not a replacement for medical care.)

Healing prayer for sustained body-pain

The Bahuk is the household tradition's central healing-prayer, especially for arm-pain, shoulder-pain, joint-pain, and any sustained physical pain where ordinary remedies have not succeeded. Verses 20-22 carry the explicit petition: "Bahuk peer mahabir begi hi nivariye" – 'great brave one, lift away the arm-pain quickly.' Many devotees recite the Bahuk daily during stretches of physical illness, alongside medical treatment. Origin

The Hanuman Bahuk is composed by Goswami Tulsidas (c. 1532-1623 CE) – the same poet who composed the Hanuman Chalisa, the Bajrang Baan, the Sankatmochan Hanumanashtak, and the Ramcharitmanas. Unlike the other Hanuman texts which are general devotional praise, the Bahuk is uniquely autobiographical – composed by Tulsidas during his own old age when he suffered severe arm pain (bahuk = arm pain) that ordinary medicine could not heal. After medical treatment failed, Tulsidas turned to Hanuman with this 44-verse petition, and the tradition holds that the pain was lifted.

The Bahuk is structurally unusual: it uses mixed metres rather than the chaupai-doha pattern of the Chalisa. The metres include Chhappay (verse 1, the long opening), Jhulna (verse 3, the swing-metre), Ghanakshari (verses 4 and several others, the dense long-line metre), and Savaiya (verses 16-17 and others). This metric variety reflects Tulsidas's mastery of the older Awadhi-Brajbhasha kavitt tradition – the same range of metres he used in the Vinaya Patrika and the Kavitavali.

The text's narrative arc is precise: verses 1-4 establish Hanuman's iconography (golden-bodied, ten-million-suns radiance, infinite arms, the form before whom every demon trembles). Verses 5-15 narrate Hanuman's major exploits in the Ramayana – the Mahabharata-flag (verse 5 describes Hanuman as Arjuna's flag-emblem in the Bharata war), the Lanka-burning (verse 6), the Kumbhakarna-Ravana defeat (verse 7), the Sanjivani-mountain (alluded throughout). How to recite

A simple, sustainable approach. Nothing here is a hard rule – devotion shapes the form, not the other way around.

  1. Preparation

    Bathe and wear clean clothes – traditionally red or saffron. Sit facing south or before the home Hanuman murti. Traditional offerings: red flowers, gud-chana, a small ghee diya, mauli thread, dhoop, and (when reciting for body-pain) a small bowl of warm sesame oil or mustard oil – the oils traditionally used for Hanuman-blessed self-massage. After the recitation, the oil is applied to the painful area as a household practice.

  2. Posture and start

    Sit cross-legged with your spine straight (or in a chair if joint-pain prevents floor-sitting – the Bahuk welcomes the seeker as they are). Bow once. Take a moment of silence to settle the body. Offer a brief sankalp naming the specific pain or illness. Begin only after the Hanuman Chalisa as the foundation.

  3. Recitation

    Move through the 44 verses without rushing. The Bahuk takes about 12 minutes spoken aloud. Verses 16-25 are the personal-petition verses where many devotees pause and bring full attention – especially verses 20, 22, 24, where Tulsidas explicitly names the bahu-peer (arm-pain). Read with awareness that this is the same prayer Tulsidas himself used.

  4. After

    Sit quietly with eyes closed for a moment. Many people end with the bija mantra Om Han Hanumate Namah recited 11 or 21 times. Apply the warm oil to the painful area as a self-massage practice (a household tradition; not a substitute for prescribed medical massage). Offer the gud-chana bhog and take a small portion as prasad.

  5. Daily practice and special days
